Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation, one of the sacraments of initiation into full communion with the Catholic Church, strengthens the new life in Christ which was received at Baptism.  By receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, the faithful are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with the strength of the Holy Spirit.  The spiritual gifts bestowed at the time of Confirmation “confirm” the believer as a committed and true witness of Christ, and obligate the believer to testify to the Christian faith through word and deed.  Like Baptism the Sacrament of Confirmation can only be received once over the course of a person’s life.

The Celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation at Saint Agnes Church

When a young person enters the 8th year of grade school an invitation is extended by the parish to consider receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.  Students are prepared and discern their readiness for this sacrament by way of prayer, catechesis (education), and retreat.  Then on a specified date, usually in early November, the bishop of the diocese presides over the ceremony at Saint Agnes Church.

Catholic adults wishing to receive the sacrament are instructed here at Saint Agnes Church and then celebrate the sacrament with the bishop of the diocese at a Mass on Pentecost Sunday at the cathedral.

Non-Catholic adults and non-baptized adults wishing to receive the sacrament are enrolled in the parish RCIA program and receive the sacrament at the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter Sunday).  Questions can be directed to Paula Fritz, Coordinator of RCIA, at (859) 431-1802 or pfritz@saintagnes.com.
