Dear St. Agnes Family,
I apologize for 2 weeks in a row of getting this to you later than I would have liked. I had mentioned last week that my computer had crashed. When I brought it home from repair last Monday there was nothing on my desktop or in my documents. I had to take it back to the repair shop. Fortunately it was an easy fix that was done in minutes while I waited. All of my data was recovered including the 13 days I hadn’t yet backed up.
Life has not at all slowed down since Christmas. My granddaughter’s school is still in remote learning and I’ve been responsible for making sure she logs onto her meetings and overseeing her school work while my son and wife are at work. Fortunately I’ve been able to do most of my administrative work and rehearsals from home. After I had already planned the music for this weekend I realized that this Monday, January 18, is the day we celebrate and remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For many years now on the Sunday of this weekend at the later Mass we’ve incorporated the song, “Thanks Be to God,” by Marty Haugen from his musical, Agape. We would involve the children’s choir and SATB voices along with the various instrumentalists from our music ministry. This year due to covid restrictions we’re still limited to just a cantor and myself. Since we couldn’t use all of the parts written for the original arrangement, I came up with a duet arrangement of the song which I’ve successfully rehearsed with the cantors and incorporated as a 2nd Communion song. I’ve included links to recordings of all of the music for this weekend with the exception of the Psalm which I composed a number of years ago, but is unpublished. The recording of “Thanks Be to God” is the original studio recording that I had the privilege of playing guitar on.
For most weeks during the Prayers of the Faithful we’ve been praying for an end to divisions and prejudices, especially those based on race. Given what took place at the Capitol on January 6 and as we prepare for the inauguration of a new president, may we remember the teachings of Dr. King and pray for an end to hatred and violence in our country and in the world. May we all work for peace both at home and abroad.
